Where Vietnam’s Stories Begin

From the lantern-lit lanes of Hanoi to the limestone seascapes of Ha Long Bay and the quiet waterways of Ninh Binh, the north is a region of contrasts. Layered history meets living tradition, and ordinary moments reveal the depth of local life.

Beyond the delta, the highlands hold terraced valleys, remote villages and cultures shaped by the mountains. Thoughtful pacing, honest seasonal advice and local knowledge keep each day grounded rather than crammed.

Ask Rose About This Region

What to Experience

Hanoi’s Old Quarter

The thirty-six guild streets, a few still known for their original trade.

A Night on Ha Long Bay

Limestone islands, best seen when the day boats have gone.

Terraces and Village Paths

Walking between hamlets in the valleys above Sapa.

Karsts Without the Sea

Ninh Binh: the same limestone towers, rising out of rice fields.

When to travel

A Region of Many Seasons

Spring

Mar – Apr

Mild and often clear, with blossom in the mountains. One of the easiest windows for travelling in the north.

Summer Rains

May – Aug

Hot and humid, with heavy afternoon downpours and the greenest landscapes of the year. Typhoons are possible on the coast.

Autumn

Sep – Nov

The most reliable stretch: drier, clearer and comfortable, with the rice harvest turning the terraces gold.

Winter

Dec – Feb

Cool to cold, often grey and misty. Pack layers — Sapa can approach freezing and Ha Long is frequently hazy.

Conditions shift from year to year. Rose checks the current outlook for your exact dates before confirming a route.

Our Approach to Thoughtful Travel

Planning Hanoi & the North

How many days should I allow?

Seven to ten covers Hanoi, the bay and one mountain region without rushing. Fourteen reaches the far north.

Can Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and the mountains fit in one trip?

Comfortably, in about a week. The drives are the constraint rather than the distances.

What should I expect from road travel?

Good expressways between the main cities and slower mountain roads beyond them. Rose checks real travel times before proposing a route rather than assuming map estimates.

When is the best time to come?

Autumn, roughly September to November, is the most reliable. Spring is a close second.
