Rowed Through the Karsts
At Tam Coc the boatwomen row with their feet — a technique particular to this stretch of river.
The same karst towers as Ha Long, rising out of rice fields instead of water. Two hours from Hanoi, and quiet enough on a weekday that you can hear the oars.
A single full day covers the essentials. A second turns it into a proper rest — cycling the back lanes, a temple in the late afternoon, and no need to be anywhere.

Layered neighbourhoods, quiet courtyards and a food culture best discovered with a local.

At Tam Coc the boatwomen row with their feet — a technique particular to this stretch of river.

Flat lanes between rice fields, ducks and limestone towers.

Vietnam’s capital in the tenth century, now two quiet temples.

Around five hundred of them, to the view everyone photographs.
When to travel
Cool and green, with temple festivals through the first months of the lunar year.
The rice ripens gold before the harvest — the most photographed weeks at Tam Coc.
Hot and humid with heavy showers. The boats still run; start early and bring a hat.
Drier, cooler and much quieter — the easiest cycling weather of the year.

One full day covers it comfortably. A second night is worth it if you want to cycle and simply sit still for an afternoon.
It can be, but it makes for a long day. Staying a night costs little and turns a rush into a rest.
Trang An is longer, passes through more caves and is better managed. Tam Coc is shorter and prettier through the rice. We usually choose Trang An.
Midweek, and early. Vietnamese visitors arrive in numbers at weekends, especially between May and September.
