The Largest Caves on Earth

A limestone massif on the Laos border, riddled with cave systems on a scale that is difficult to photograph convincingly. Son Doong is the largest known cave passage anywhere.

Reaching Phong Nha takes effort, which is why it stays quiet. Two or three days covers the accessible caves, a river valley still farmed by hand, and a good deal of forest.

What to Experience

Into the Caves

Phong Nha and Paradise are enormous, and only two of many.

River Caves by Kayak

Reaching cave mouths by water, which is how they were found.

The National Park

Limestone forest, very few people and a great deal of quiet.

The Valley Villages

Farming hamlets along the Son river, still working the land.

When to travel

When to Visit Phong Nha

Caving Season

Feb – Apr

Dry and mild, with the river low enough for the boat caves. The main window for visiting.

Warm and Green

May – Aug

Hot and humid above ground, cool inside the caves. The best stretch for multi-day expeditions.

High Water

Sep – Nov

Heavy rain raises the Son river and floods cave mouths; Phong Nha and the water caves close for stretches at a time.

Cool and Quiet

Dec – Jan

Cool and damp, some caves still shut. Green, empty, and comfortable for trekking.

Conditions shift from year to year. Rose checks the current outlook for your exact dates before confirming a route.

Our Approach to Thoughtful Travel

Planning Phong Nha

How do we get there?

Fly to Dong Hoi, then about forty-five minutes by road. It can also be reached overland from Hue in roughly four hours.

Can we visit Son Doong?

Only on a licensed multi-day expedition, booked far in advance and limited to a small number of permits each year. We can point you to the operator who holds them.

When are the caves open?

Water levels close some caves during the heaviest rain, usually October and November. February to August is the reliable window.

Is it suitable for children?

The larger show caves, yes. The kayaking and wet caves have age and swimming requirements we will check for your party.
