The Ancient Town, Early
Before nine and after nine it is a different, better town.
Central
Craft, cuisine and lantern-lit streets, balanced with restorative time by the coast.
Hoi An silted up and its harbour moved north to Da Nang. The merchant houses, Japanese bridge and Chinese assembly halls survived precisely because the money left — a trading town preserved by the decline of its own trade.
It is busy in the middle of the day and lovely at either end of it. Three or four days lets you see the Ancient Town early, spend the afternoons at the beach or in the water, and still have time for a tailor and a kitchen.

Garden houses, royal history and a distinctive cuisine along the Perfume River.

Before nine and after nine it is a different, better town.

Made to measure, done unhurried — allow three days and more than one fitting.

The dish most bound up with Hoi An, and the Tra Que gardens behind it.

Four kilometres of beach, fifteen minutes from the lanterns.
When to travel
Dry, warm and calm — the best all-round window for both the Ancient Town and the beach.
Hot and dry, often above 35°C. Mornings in town, afternoons in the sea.
Heavy rain and tropical storms. In some years the Ancient Town floods and boats replace bicycles in the lanes.
Cooler, greyer and still showery. Quiet and atmospheric, but not beach weather.

Three to four. Two is enough for the town and leaves nothing for the coast, the food or a tailor.
Da Nang. It is about forty-five minutes by road to Hoi An, and we meet you there.
September to November brings the heaviest rain in central Vietnam, and the Ancient Town does flood in some years. If your dates fall there we will say so plainly and build in alternatives.
If you have around three days, yes. Rushed overnight tailoring is where the disappointing stories come from, so your itinerary puts the first fitting on the day you arrive and leaves room for another.
