Where the River Finally Arrives

Nine branches of the Mekong reaching the sea, and a landscape where the water is the road. Boats, floating markets, orchards and houses that face the canal rather than the street.

A day trip from Saigon reaches only the edge. One night in the delta lets you be on the water at dawn, which is the only time the floating markets are actually trading.

Our Approach to Thoughtful Travel

Planning Mekong Delta

Is a day trip enough?

Not really. The markets are at their busiest around first light and have largely wound down by mid-morning, so seeing them properly means staying the night before.

How far is it from Ho Chi Minh City?

Two to three hours by road from Ho Chi Minh City to Ben Tre or My Tho; Can Tho is further, so for a Cai Rang floating-market itinerary we usually fly into Can Tho (VCA) instead.

What is the weather like?

Warm to hot all year, with no cold season at all. December to March is driest; September to November is the high-water season, which is when the canals are at their fullest.

Is it suitable for older travellers?

Yes, with care taken over boat steps and jetties. We choose the larger, more stable boats and skip the monkey bridges.
